Somers Foreshore Friends Group Working Bees

WORKING BEE

Sunday 16th June

Almost all of the work on the Somers Foreshore is performed by the dedicated band of volunteers of the Friends of Somers Foreshore

We need your help.  If you are a keen gardener you can learn how to protect the Somers Foreshore. Join us! Contact the Somers Foreshore Committee at: somers.foreshore.com@gmail.com

What has been going on on the Foreshore?

We’ve lost a piece of the lower track, between the Yacht Club and the track from the Pines. The sea ate it!

With lots of hard work the track has been brought inland as far as it can go. If the new track goes then that will be it!

The large leaning Pine just east of the diverted track will soon be felled as it presents a hazard. It will take a large hunk out of the remaining dune if it falls by its self – and it could squash someone as it comes down! By felling the tree before nature takes control it is hoped that the roots will help to hold the dune together for a little longer.
Another great load of green waste went to the tip from the last Working Bee.
This time it was weed from the slopes around the lower car park and the last of the pile of small branches from the pile under the trees near the Club House.

Hayden mowed the patch when all the cleaning up was done and declared he was mowing crop circles – best keep a watch out for aliens

The Swamp Rats are back and very busy. Runs and tunnels are appearing all over the place. The family near the top BBQ are back and are hoping for the odd dropped apple and a pair of the dearest bright eyed creatures watched with interest as volunteers spread mulch around the upper car park one week day recently.

Please remember these animals are not vermin – they are native to this country.     They are vegetarians and build runs amongst the undergrowth and grasses – eating sedges, grasses and berries. They will not get in your roof but they might hide in your wood pile or under your bushes.

Warning: Native Swamp Rats will eat rat bait as it is vegetable based and it will kill they!  Please be careful.
