Somers Proposed Picnic
Spot
The Somers Foreshore Committee of Management is working to
come up with a plan to improve the Somers Lower car park adjacent
to the Somers Yacht club. Actually a detailed plan was drawn
up fifteen years ago, but nothing ever eventuated. The car
park is owned by DSE and so comes under the responsibility of the
Somers Foreshore committee. The team members included Peter
Hohaus from the C of M, former Commodore Jim Enever represented the
SYC and design engineer Mark Soon represented Mornington Peninsula
Shire. Our intention was to preserve significant native
vegetation, such as the old Manna Gum you pass as you enter the car
park, whilst improving the distribution of parking spaces. Follow this link to
review many versions of the Somers Car Park Concept Plan.
Somers New Picnic Spot
Base has been prepared, re-vegetation zone has
been created and trailer parking has been initiated.
Years ago truckloads of soil, probably building excavations,
were dumped to the west of the amenities block. This probably
killed many of the mature coastal banksias. We all agreed
that the area might make a great Somers community family picnic
area. We had an opportunity to make something good out of
what is really a bit of a mess. The first stage of the Picnic
Area is now complete.
The area was covered by around a meter of kikuyu grass.
The Somers Cof M voted to clear the weeds just to find out what was
there. Once cleared the mounds of earth were revealed.
These mounds mere smoothed out to make a base for a very fine
picnic area with views of Phillip Island. For safety reasons,
the dead banksias were felled. The area was smoothed out with
suitable earth moving equipment supplied by Maw Civil. We now
need volunteers to help us move the existing picnic equipment from
the centre of the car park to the proposed new site. This
move will separate families and their children from car
traffic. Below are pictures of the Picnic Spot after
initial clearing.
Mark Soon assisted us in developing several “concept" plans
which are like a birds eye view of what we may be able to achieve
at the car park. Of course this project depends on
coastal management approval , already granted for the Picnic
Spot, and the availability of funding. However we feel
that we can make a lot of progress with the dedicated volunteers
who currently maintain the Somers Foreshore.

personal effort, please contact the project team on Somers.Foreshore.CoM@gmail.com.
