INTRODUCING YOUR NEIGHBOUR
Please meet Eulamprus tympanum the Southern Water Skink.
Eulamprus tympanum is the quietest and least intrusive neighbour
anyone could hope to have.
Water Skink will not wake you with declarations of undying love
nor bounce on your roof like a Circus Oz troop nor create runs in
your lawn to catch the unwary mower wheel nor make lines of ‘nose
holes’ along your path edges.
All this little skink asks for is a safe sunny place to bask in
and some hidey-holes in logs or between rocks to keep warm and safe
in in winter and at night.
Water Skink will eat your snails and slugs, slaters, ants, small
frogs, tadpoles and other yummy insects so if you are lucky enough
to share your garden with this delightful neighbour please not put
down snail bait or use chemicals to poison insects because you will
be poisoning the food chain in your garden.
At this moment Mr. Water Skink is very busy touring the area
looking for likely ladies as spring is in his blood and she is
thinking of the little family that will be born when summer
comes.
One hot sunny day six or seven tiny, perfect and independent
Water Skinks will be born to Mrs. Water Skink and they will
immediately set out upon the busy business of cleaning up your
snails and creepy-crawlies and they will take great joy in soaking
up the sun on your path. Please welcome them.
